Pulse of Unity

Stijn D’Hondt is an interdisciplinary artist who works at the intersection of art and science. His project ‘Artbeats’ captures the poetry of heartbeats with technology and a finger sensor. D’Hondt records people’s heartbeat during an open-hearted conversation. He uses these unique heartbeats to create ‘nostalgic landscapes’ with data visualisation and personal details from the conversations. Themes such as grief, heart coherence and the vulnerability of life are central to his work. Pulse of Unity aims to stimulate connection on our planet by merging the heartbeat of two individuals with different backgrounds into a single whole. He was inspired by the colours of the flags of countries in conflict.
