Ruth Van der Looven heads the paediatric rehabilitation centre at UZ Gent and became known for her work in the TV series Topdokters. However, the paediatric rehabilitation doctor also wears another hat: she co-founded Smart Space, a hospital-wide platform that uses VR and AR, among other things, to intertwine clinical care, practice-relevant research and product development.
Smart Space began as an ambitious project to improve the quality of rehabilitation using technology. Today, it is committed to truly individualised rehabilitation care using state-of-the-art sensing, computing and communication technology. Smart Space represents a unique combination of high-quality clinical rehabilitation, innovative cutting-edge technology and pioneering research.
