Rudi Beyaert

Ranked by Clarivate Among the Most Highly Cited Researchers in the Field of Immunology

Rudi Beyaert is full professor in Molecular Biology at Ghent University and Deputy Science Director at the VIB Center for Inflammation Research, where he also leads the Unit of Molecular Signal Transduction in Inflammation. He has a track record of 30+ years in studying immune responses and mechanisms.

Beyaert’s team made several important discoveries that triggered research in many other labs worldwide and some of his findings also opened the way to novel treatment options. He has authored over 310 peer-reviewed papers and was ranked by Clarivate among the most Highly Cited Researchers in the field of Immunology in 2022 and 2023. He is also an inventor on 10+ patent applications and his research has contributed to two VIB spin-offs.

On top of that, Beyaert has shown strong leadership in the training and advancement of young scientists: 39 PhD students and 23 postdocs were trained in his lab, most of whom have afterwards taken up important positions in academia and industry. Seven of his former trainees now hold professor positions.

Finally, the professor is on the editorial board of several journals and serves as an expert panel member for multiple (inter)national science funding organizations. He has also been involved in several (inter)national research consortia and coordinates the VIB Grand Challenges Program on primary immunodeficiency.
