On Running an Internationally Renowned ‘Barriers in Inflammation’ Team

Prof. Dr. Roos Vandenbroucke obtained her Master’s degree in Biotechnology and a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences (with a focus on gene therapy) in 2008 at Ghent University. During her postdoctoral research, she became fascinated by the blood-CSF interface located at the choroid plexus and founded her independent research lab at Ghent University in 2015 and at VIB in 2018.

Her ‘Barriers in Inflammation’ team is internationally recognized for its expertise in brain barriers, neuroinflammation, the gut-brain axis and extracellular vesicles. Her current research focuses on studying the mechanisms at the blood-brain interface, exploring the importance of the gut-brain axis in neurological disorders and improving the delivery of drugs into the brain.
